Effect of Pollen from Different Plant Species on Development of Typhlodromus pyri (Sheuten) (Acari: Phytoseiidae) Chilean J. Agric. Res.

Typhlodromus pyri (Sheuten) (Acari: Phytoseiidae) is a phytoseiid mite with a high potential in controlling the false Chilean mite (Brevipalpus chilensis Baker; Acari: Tenuipalpidae). The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of different plant species pollen as a complementary food in the development of T. pyri when its prey is in low levels of availability. Mites were individually placed on black plastic boxes with pollen and maintained at a temperature of 26 ± 2 °C, 70 ± 5% relative humidity (RH), and a photoperiod of 16:8 h (L:D). Intra-individual behavioral variability displayed by tuna at fish aggregating devices (FADs) ArchiMer

Fishers have exploited the associative behavior displayed by several pelagic fish species with floating objects for decades, through the use of man-made fish aggregating devices (FADs), which facilitate the capture of such species. However, our understanding of this associative behavior and its adaptive value is poor and the scientific community is ill-equipped to provide fishery managers with science-based recommendations on the impacts of FADs on ecosystems. Predation as a Mortality Factor in Populations of the Spittlebug, Deois flavopicta Stål (Homoptera: Cercopidae) Neotropical Entomology

The spittlebug, Deois flavopicta Stål, is the main pest in cultivated pastures of the "Cerrados" (savanna) in the central region of Brazil. The insect has three discrete generations during the rainy season (September-April) and a synchronized population of diapausing eggs during the dry season (May-August). Experiments in cultivated pastures showed that nonspecific predators were able to affect significantly the mortality rates of diapausing eggs and nymphs of D. flavopicta. Predation was a density independent mortality factor that reduced diapausing eggs by approximately 60% and nymphs by 20% to 47%.
